WALK FROM WEST BURTON, JUNE

Wensleydale was the setting for Saturday's walk by the Harrogate Group. The walk started from the picturesque village of West Burton and was led by Keith Wadd. From the Village Green the group of fourteen walked east to cross Walden Beck and ascend the fellside to Hudson Quarry Lane. After an hour in the car the exercise lifted the spirits as well as the pulse rate! The walkers then turned to walk along The Lane in an easterly direction to reach the footpath over West Witton Moor at Nossill End. A steady ascent brought us to the track along the edge of Penhill with good views along The Dale. Lunch was enjoyed close to the trig point on Penhill after which we descended past the beacon to the Melmerby-West Witton road. The sun at last broke through the clouds and stayed out for the rest of the walk. Our return route was via Witton Steeps to reach Langthwaite Lane and hence to the remains of The Knights Templars Preceptory. The final section, through Morpeth Wood, was particularly delightful with garlic and hawthorn prominant in the varying aromas accompanying our passage.
