Clare Sandercock was our leader on Saturday's eleven mile ramble from Wetherby. On a very cold but dry day, the group of nineteen walkers left the town following the well-known Ebor Way in an easterly direction heading for Thorpe Arch. After crossing the river, the pleasant riverside track brought us to field paths leading to the village of Clifford. The group enjoyed a pause in the grounds of Clifford Catholic Church and speculated about the background events that preceded some of the memorials. A quick lunch break was taken before crossing the A1 by the footbridge. It was a great pity that the footpath to the bridge had to use a lay-by which evidently enjoyed dual status as a rubbish tip. Collingham lay ahead along muddy tracks in deteriorating weather conditions. Profusions of snowdrops reminded us, however, that spring was 'just around the corner.' Recrossing the Wharfe at Linton Bridge, the last stage of our walk was again along the Ebor Way via the golf course back to our start point.
